Common Acronyms in English

Today I show you common acronyms in English. Some of them you probably know but some can be new for you.

Acronyms are words which are formed from the first letters of other words, and which are pronounced as full words.

For example AIDS is an acronym for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome.

Let's see Common Acronyms in English:

BLT = bacon, lettuce, tomato (sandwich with them)

e.g. Do you want a hamburger or a BLT?

UN = United Nations

a.k.a = also known as

e.g. Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, a.k.a. Ronaldinho, former FC Barcelona football player.

CEO = Chief Executive Officer (the president of a company)

e.g. Mark is now the CEO of the Royal Company.

CFO = Chief Financial Officer (the head of the finance department)

ER = Emergency Room (hospital)

e.g. After the accident, we were rushed to the ER

ETA = estimated time of arrival

e.g. What is the ETA of the plane?

DIY = do-it-yourself

e.g. I don't like DIY, I rather buy ready-made things.

FYI = for you information (used when you send someone a message, document that you think they should see)

e.g. He forwarded a copy of the email to several colleagues with the short message: FYI.

BYOB = bring your own booze (bring your own alcohol to a party)

e.g. The party starts at 9 p.m. BYOB.

VIP = Very Important Person

e.g. This is only VIP entrance.

UFO Unidentified Flying Object

e.g. Several UFO sightings have been reported.

RIP = Rest in Peace (from the Latin phrase requiescat in pace - for someone who has died).

PR = Public Relations (the practice of distributing information to the public and the media)

e.g. The company's putting out a lot of PR about the new product line.

MIA = Missing In Action

e.g. Two soldiers are MIA after their campaign in Iraq.

HQ = Headquarter

e.g. The company has offices throughout the country, but its HQ is located in the capital.

TBA = to be announced

e.g. The meeting will be at 8 p.m. Location TBA.

TGIF = Thank God It's Friday

e.g. I have worked 10 hours every day this week. TGIF!
